The Constitution guarantees the American people a system of government where each branch of government respects the powers and authority of the others and all Americans are free to express their political beliefs. We must preserve these principles.
Campaign Legal Center is actively engaged in the fight to defend the rule of law and political freedoms and safeguard constitutional checks and balances.
In our country, no one is above the law. The rule of law isn’t just a legal principle, it’s a safeguard. It ensures all people — including our most powerful public officials — are subject to the same laws and those laws are equally enforced. The rule of law also protects the rights that define us as Americans, from the freedom to speak out and express political dissent to the right to choose our own leaders.
Campaign Legal Center is committed to protecting the political freedoms of all Americans, defending the rule of law and preserving the checks and balances that prevent any one branch of government — or any one individual — from becoming too powerful. To that end, Campaign Legal Center is litigating against unlawful overreach and threats to the freedoms of all Americans, challenging dangerous legislation, and promoting solutions that will strengthen our democracy.

Recent Rule of Law Cases and Actions
Campaign Legal Center, Democracy Defenders Fund, and the NAACP Office of General Counsel, on behalf of LULAC, the NAACP, NAACP California/Hawaii State Conference, and NAACP Los Angeles Branch moved to intervene in a Department of Justice (DOJ) lawsuit seeking to potentially block the counting of ballots of more than 20,000 California voters. The groups are defending the freedom to vote in the 2026 midterm elections and arguing that DOJ lacks the authority to force California to disenfranchise eligible voters based on unreliable data and in violation of state and federal law.

Campaign Legal Center Action (CLCA), on behalf of Service Employees International Union Local 32BJ (SEIU 32BJ), Empire State 32BJ SEIU PAC, Common Cause and Robert Hunter, a candidate running for the State House in Alabama, sued in response to political advertisements paid for by the United States government, arguing that the ads are unlawful and exceed statutory authority. CLCA and co-counsel filed a complaint to take these ads down and to stop the government from funding these types of ads.
