There are many ways to exercise your freedom to vote in this year’s election. Whether you vote early, by mail, drop off your ballot in a secure drop box or vote in person on Election Day, our system’s series of checks and balances will ensure your vote will count.

Voting by Mail

In red, blue and purple states across the country, voting by mail is a safe and secure way to cast your ballot. This practice has existed since the Civil War and is used across the U.S. Many states send ballots to all voters that request them, some states send mail-in ballots to every voter, and some states require a voter to give a reason to vote absentee.

Regardless of your state’s policy, voting by mail is a safe and accessible way to cast your ballot. When voting by mail, send your ballot back by your state’s deadline.

Many states across the political spectrum also offer ballot drop boxes as a way for voters to return their mail-in ballots early.

Ballot drop boxes are a safe and secure way for voters to return their ballots. Secure drop boxes have been used successfully all over the U.S.

Voting Early

Early voting has already begun in many states. Whether you are returning your absentee ballot in person to a local election office, voting early by mail, or voting early in person, voting early is a great way to beat the crowds, wait times, and vote on your own timeline.

Many states offer in-person early voting on weekends, which is a great resource for voters who may have work or other commitments on Election Day.

Voting on Election Day

Voting in person on Election Day is also a great way to exercise your freedom to vote. This year, Election Day is November 5. Make sure you know where your polling place is, when it opens, and when it closes.

Regardless of how you choose to exercise your freedom to vote, every vote counts. Our democracy is strongest when every American has the opportunity to participate — make a plan to vote today.
