“Today’s decision is a setback,” said Paul Smith, vice president of the Campaign Legal Center, one of the groups that sued to challenge the Florida law. “The district court’s decision to block Florida’s pay-to-vote system followed clear Supreme Court precedent. We are hopeful that the court of appeals will follow suit and confirm once and for all that wealth cannot determine a person’s eligibility to vote.” Mark Gaber, an attorney with the Campaign Legal Center, said he hopes the appeals court does not delay in setting a hearing date. “It’s critical the court act quickly so if it’s necessary to take it to the Supreme Court there’s time for that to happen before the November election,” Gaber said.
