Last night Campaign Legal Center President Trevor Potter appeared again on Comedy Central’s “The Colbert Report” as host Stephen Colbert’s “personal lawyer” in a continuing discussion of the Colbert Super PAC's legal issues. The segment illustrates the absurdities of the nation’s campaign finance laws. As Colbert weighs a run for “President of the United States of South Carolina”, Potter hands him the papers to transfer control of his Super PAC to fellow Comedy Central host Jon Stewart.
The discussion focused on the fact that FEC coordination regulations are so riddled with loopholes that it is quite easy for candidates to ‘coordinate’ with Super PACs without violating the agency’s regulations barring coordination.
The Colbert Super PAC website has also made clear that the entity “can now be referred to as The Definitely Not Coordinating With Stephen Colbert Super PAC.”

Potter is representing Mr. Colbert through his private practice and has disqualified himself from any matters at the FEC involving Colbert’s political activities.
