Ahead of the 2024 election, voters, community organizations and nonprofits in Virginia and Alabama have successfully halted illegal voter purge programs that wrongfully targeted naturalized citizens, especially Black and brown voters.
As a result of lawsuits filed by Campaign Legal Center and our partner organizations on behalf of our clients in both states, courts have ordered Virginia and Alabama to put an end to their efforts to prevent qualified U.S. citizens from voting in the 2024 election.
These victories for voters solidify what we know to be true: All Americans have the freedom to vote — no matter where they were born.
Most recently, a judge ruled to temporarily halt Virginia’s last-minute and illegal voter purge program and is requiring the state to put voters back on the rolls.
Earlier this month, a court blocked a similar program in Alabama as a result of a different lawsuit brought by CLC and our partners.
These eleventh hour voter purge programs blatantly violated federal law and relied on faulty and outdated data. These purges — which were happening with early voting already underway — inevitably wound up impacting qualified U.S. citizens.
We celebrate halting these unlawful purge programs that unjustly target voters of color and naturalized voters.
Naturalized citizens are immigrants who have worked hard to become American citizens and have the same freedom to vote as all other Americans. These court decisions will ensure that all American citizens have the freedom to register and vote without concerns about government interference or intimidation.
