Fla. Ex-Cons Who Can't Pay Fines Set For Voting Rights Win

The fees and fines are not calibrated to the crime and do not operate as punishment, but instead are taxes that go into funding the court system, attorney Danielle Lang said in closing arguments.  "This is a failure of procedural due process, plain and simple. "This is not a minority of cases," Lang said. "This is what the system looks like. This is what people's cases look like. It is complicated, and it is not going to get better."
