CLC Letter to the House Administration Committee Opposing the Voter ID Act

On June 23, 2026, Campaign Legal Center sent a letter to every member of the Committee on House Administration in the U.S. House of Representatives, urging them to reject the Voter ID Act during a markup on June 24. In this letter, CLC explains how the Voter ID Act would impose significant new barriers to Americans’ democratic participation, while failing to include meaningful safeguards to ensure voters who cannot meet the bill's strict requirements are still able to prove their eligibility and cast a ballot that counts. It details how the legislation only allows an unreasonably narrow list of acceptable forms of identification, fails to account for the diversity of Tribal identification practices, and does not provide a meaningful affidavit or fail-safe voting process for eligible Americans who do not possess one of the bill's limited types of qualifying documentation. If enacted, the Voter ID Act would result in many eligible voters being unable to cast a ballot that counts, infringing on Americans' freedom to vote and undermining the core principles of our democracy.
