Campaign Legal Center's virtual event, "Fair Maps for the People: How Redistricting Shaped the 2022 Election" was held on February 24, 2023.

Panelists examined how federal and state court decisions in redistricting cases likely determined control of the U.S. House of Representatives, compared states with fair maps and states where maps were gerrymandered or discriminated against voters of color and discussed solutions that are most likely to produce fair maps.

Every 10 years, states engage in the process of redistricting – the redrawing of district boundaries to reflect changes in the population. When done correctly, this process ensures every voice is heard and every vote is counted equally in our elections.

However, when the drawing of voting maps is left in the hands of politicians, they often rig the system to benefit themselves and manipulate voting maps to dictate the outcome of elections. They often do this in two ways, through partisan gerrymandering and racial vote dilution. The result is dysfunction, distrust and a government that ignores the will of the people it was formed to serve.

Speakers included Mark Gaber, Senior Director for Redistricting at Campaign Legal Center, Ruth Greenwood, Director of the Election Law Clinic at Harvard Law School and Mark Niesse, reporter at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Mark Joseph Stern, Senior Writer for Slate Magazine, served as Moderator.
