United States v. Bellows — Order Granting Motions to Dismiss and Denying the United States' Motion to Show Cause

Date
Court Level
District Court

On May 21, 2026, the Court granted the Motions to Dismiss including the one filed by the League of Women Voters of Maine as Defendant-Intervenors, represented by CLC, the Brennan Center, and Johnson, Webbert, and Beard, LLP. The Court adopted the argument made by the LWVME that the United States had not stated a valid purpose in support of its request under the Civil Rights Act. The Court also found that the Civil Rights Act does not allow for a request for the state voter registration list. This decision means that the State of Maine will not have to send its unredacted voter list to the Department of Justice.
