Letter to SOS Allen Seeking AG Opinion

CLC sent a letter to Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen, requesting that he seek an opinion from Attorney General Steve Marshall on the constitutionality of H.B. 100’s implementation date. H.B. 100 — which effectively adds over 120 new crimes to the list of felonies involving moral turpitude, the convictions that take away the right to vote in Alabama — is set to go into effect on October 1, 2024. This is just one month before the November general election. CLC attorneys point out that this implementation date violates the Alabama Constitution's prohibition on election laws taking effect during the six months leading up a general election. In this letter, CLC seeks clarity and assurance on H.B. 100’s implementation date from the Secretary of State and Attorney General to prevent voter and election worker confusion
