Letter from Campaign Legal Center and Society for the Rule of Law Institute Opposing Court Contempt Provision of House Budget Bill
On June 4, 2025, Trevor Potter, President of Campaign Legal Center, and Gregg Nunziata, Executive Director of the Society for the Rule of Law Institute, sent a letter to the entire United States Senate, expressing strong opposition to Sec. 70302 of H.R. 1, President Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill.” This provision in the House of Representatives’ budget reconciliation package would severely restrict federal courts’ authority to hold government officials in contempt if they violate judicial orders. If enacted, it would significantly undermine the judicial branch’s ability to enforce its rulings, threatening both the rule of law and the constitutional balance of powers that underlie our system of government. Potter and Nunziata’s letter explains these deep concerns and urges the Senate to defeat Sec. 70302 to protect our Constitution.
