CLC Seeks Information on IRS Filing Error Impacting Election Transparency
On April 23, 2026, Campaign Legal Center (CLC) submitted a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The FOIA request sought information concerning an error with the IRS’ electronic filing system that prevented political organizations registered under section 527 of the Internal Revenue Code (like the Republican Attorneys General Association and Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee) from filing complete reports of their contributions and expenditures. The filing error — which impacted multiple filing deadlines — left the public in the dark for months about the sources of approximately $51 million in funding at a key time in the election cycle. Because transparency in elections is critical, CLC requested information to understand how the glitch happened and whether the IRS has permanently fixed the problem, so that 527 organizations do not become de facto dark money groups.
