CLC Alleges Donald Trump Illegally Raised and Spent Soft Money on 2026 Midterms

On September 14, 2026, Campaign Legal Center (CLC) filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) alleging that President Donald J. Trump has violated federal campaign finance laws that prohibit federal officeholders from raising and spending “soft money” — i.e., funds that do not comply with federal contribution amount limits, source prohibitions, and reporting requirements — in connection with the 2026 midterm elections. Specifically, CLC’s complaint alleges that Trump has violated the law based on Trump’s recent public statements repeatedly admitting that he controls and directs the spending of “MAGA Inc.,” a political committee that functions like a super PAC and has raised over $400 million almost entirely from a small group of ultrawealthy individuals, corporations, and special interest groups.
