Campaign Legal Center Letter Opposing President Trump’s Overreach in DC
On August 14, 2025, Campaign Legal Center (CLC) sent a letter to every member of the United States Congress, expressing strong opposition to President Trump’s interventions in the District of Columbia. The president's efforts to unjustifiably federalize D.C.'s local law enforcement and deploy the National Guard into the District are not only unprecedented, but a troubling misuse of executive power and a direct affront to our country's core democratic principles. Accordingly, CLC’s letter urges Congress to end this presidential overreach immediately. This episode also clearly highlights the urgent need for D.C. statehood. Importantly, the president's actions in D.C. are only possible because of a longstanding injustice in our democracy: the disenfranchisement of over 700,000 Americans living in our nation's capital who lack true representation in Congress and control over their own governance. CLC’s letter also therefore urges Congress to finally grant D.C. the sovereign statehood its residents deserve.
