Democracy in Peril: The War on Voting Rights a CNN documentary on voting rights in America, featured CLC’s Ruth Greenwood and CLC’s work for #FairMaps.

A review of voter suppression tactics, the documentary cited partisan gerrymandering as an effective tool used to dilute the power of voters.  The documentary featured Greenwood and CLC’s case, Gill v. Whitford, and explained how Wisconsin’s maps – like many others in the country – silence the voices of voters.  CLC continues to the litigate the case on behalf of Wisconsin voters, who were also featured in the documentary.

This election cycle, citizens across the country are taking the fight for #FairMaps into their own hands with state ballot initiatives. Ballot initiatives in Colorado, Michigan, Utah and Missouri call for the creation of an independent redistricting commission to take the power of redistricting out of the hands of legislators and create district boundaries that are not beholden to any political party. Learn more about independent redistricting commissions (IRC) in CLC’s report Designing Independent Redistricting Commissions

Voters should pick their elected officials, not the other way around. CLC remains on the frontlines for redistricting reform in the courts and research to support the creation of IRCs.
