The FEC prohibits candidates from using campaign funds for personal expenses, such as clothing and teeth whitening, said Paul S. Ryan, deputy executive director of the nonpartisan Campaign Legal Center in Washington.

Candidates may purchase items of minimal value for staff and volunteers "such as campaign T-shirts or caps with campaign slogans," Ryan said. But "it's illegal for candidates to buy clothing like suits."
