Kedric Payne, general counsel at the watchdog Campaign Legal Center and a former attorney at the Office of Congressional Ethics, said first-blush analysis of the trial bar lobbying and Democratic support suggests standard lobbying activity. “Without any additional facts, this just appears to be lobbying 101 and not anything more swampy,” Payne said. “The American Association for Justice represents plaintiff trial attorneys, not the public.” Many Democrats are putting their weight behind not only the PFAS package, but the trial bar itself. “I think we have to be aggressive,” Sen. Ben Cardin, a member of the Environmental and Public Works Committee, said.
