“This could have a radically negative impact on the integrity of New Jersey elections and certainly on the public’s trust in their candidates and elected officials,” said Tara Malloy, deputy executive director of the Campaign Legal Center, a group in Washington that focuses on campaign finance and regulatory issues.

Malloy, of the Campaign Legal Center, said the situation in New Jersey “is not unique but extreme.” In many states, she said, “the fox is guarding the henhouse.”

“Because election agencies are often regulating the very people who make the law and make the appointments, they are uniquely vulnerable to this type of neglect or even outright hostility,” Malloy said.
