It’s pretty clear what the Trump administration wants to do with these donor disclosure requirements — senior Treasury officials have been talking about chucking them for close to a couple years now. Since then, the IRS has produced proposed regulations that would accomplish that goal, and this morning’s hearing on those rules could be one of the final steps before they go final. Groups that want more disclosure in politics have pushed back against the idea that there’s limited benefit to the information that nonprofits have to give, with the Campaign Legal Center calling the IRS “the only federal government entity that required any level of transparency whatsoever for 501(c)(4)s.”
