“Those fundraisers are where influence is peddled,” said Brendan Fischer, director of federal reform for the Campaign Legal Center. “It’s effectively buying access. We accept it, and it’s become normalized, but if a fundraiser requires a $2,800 check to get in the door, a candidate is selling access to themselves.”

Fischer, at the Campaign Legal Center, said it appears Biden is trying to straddle a fine line between responding to the political moment of frustration with America’s wealthy, and needing to ask them for money. “That’s indicative of the problems these high dollar fundraisers present,” Fischer said. “The candidate has to present themselves on the side of these donors.”
