Gizmodo: Lawmakers Take Action Against Facebook Election Propaganda

The first major legislative effort to rein in foreign interference in US elections will kick off Thursday afternoon on Capitol Hill.

The Honest Ads Act has received a stamp of approval from the nonpartisan Campaign Legal Center, whose president, Trevor Potter, is a former Republican chairman of the Federal Election Commission.

"In 2016 Russians bought online political ads designed to influence our election and divide Americans," the lawmakers wrote in a Wednesday press release. "The content and purchaser(s) of those online advertisements are a mystery to the public because of outdated laws that have failed to keep up with evolving technology. The Honest Ads Actwould help prevent foreign actors from influencing our elections by ensuring that political ads sold online are covered by the same rules as ads sold on TV, radio, and satellite."
