Fighting the bracket on ballots

The practice is known as “bracketing,” and it refers to the way that candidates in primary elections can come together — bracket — under a label that puts them in the same column on the ballot. Groups such as the state League of Women Voters, the New Jersey Institute for Social Justice, Salvation and Social Justice, and the national Campaign Legal Center have filed amicus briefs supporting the effort.
