Stearns, an Ocala Republican, must pay a civil penalty of $6,900 to the commission and reimburse his political committee $8,120 for using funds for personal use, according to an agreement with the FEC. The agreement, first reported by Politico, has not yet been made public. However, the Washington, D.C.-based Campaign Legal Center, which filed the original complaint, shared a copy of its July 16 letter with The Sun. “We’re happy that the FEC is starting to take the issue of ‘zombie’ campaign seriously,” said CLC media strategist Corey Goldstone. “This should put former politicians on notice that it is illegal to use old campaign committees as a personal slush fund.”
