Bloomberg: Congress must step up to improve ethics enforcement

Congress should restore the enforcement of standards that have been ignored by the Trump administration, the U.S. government’s former ethics chief told an international conference Monday.

“We’re in an ethics crisis now in the executive branch,” Walter Shaub said at the Council of Government Ethics Laws meeting in Toronto.

Shaub left before the end of his five-year term and now serves as the senior director for ethics at the Campaign Legal Center, a Washington, D.C., nonprofit that advocates for stronger campaign finance and ethics rules.

Congress could strengthen executive-branch ethics enforcement by creating a new “all-purpose inspector general” to enforce the rules set by the Office of Government Ethics, Schaub said.

“In the end, Congress has a job to do” to restore ethical norms, he said.
