Federal election regulators are raising questions about the latest campaign filing submitted by Congressman Duncan Hunter, the East County Republican already facing criminal charges over his handling of political donations. Erin Chlopak, of the Campaign Legal Center in Washington D.C., said federal election regulators’ request for more information is not unusual. “The FEC has internal thresholds they use that trigger these reports,” said Chlopak, director of campaign finance strategy for the nonpartisan charity that works to hold government officials and candidates accountable to election laws. “When the volume of itemized contributions exceeds a certain level, they might ask for a follow up,” Chlopak said. “Campaigns then either clarify that they made a mistake or, in fact, the total amount they reported was correct.”
