Harness v. Watness – Amicus Brief of CLC

On Friday, December 2, 2022, Campaign Legal Center (CLC) filed a friend-of-the-court brief in the U.S. Supreme Court, urging the Court to take up the case Harness v. Watson and reverse the Fifth Circuit’s decision to uphold Mississippi’s racially discriminatory felony disenfranchisement system. Mississippi is the only state the U.S. which requires a vote of two-thirds of the legislature to restore an individual’s right to vote after being convicted of disenfranchising crimes, an extreme outlier and a relic of Jim Crow that continues to serve the purpose for which it was enacted: to prevent Black citizens from voting.
