CLC Testimony in Support of California AB 2839 (AI and deceptive media in political advertising)

Date

Campaign Legal Center submitted written testimony to the Assembly Elections Committee in California in support AB 2839, which would provide important protections for California voters by helping to limit the spread of disinformation and deepfakes in political campaign ads and independent expenditures. AB 2839 would help to prevent artificial intelligence (AI)-based election manipulation by prohibiting the distribution of deceptive and materially false political communications generated or manipulated by AI that feature candidates, elected officials, and election officials and providing a fast track for injunctive relief to stop violations of that ban. CLC’s comments highlight the threat AI poses as a tool to create deceptive media, influence voters, and sow confusion in our elections and the importance of addressing this threat through tools like AB 2839.
