CLC Letter to Maine Legislature

On April 25, 2023, Campaign Legal Center submitted testimony to the Veterans and Legal Affairs Committee of the Maine Legislature in support of L.D. 1590, a bill to require transparency for the original sources of funds spent to influence Maine elections. CLC’s testimony highlighted how L.D. 1590’s transparency requirements promote First Amendment interests and are consistent with long-standing U.S. Supreme Court precedent upholding campaign finance disclosure laws as critical for ensuring voters are more informed about their choices on the ballot; deterring corruption and the appearance of corruption; and enforcing other campaign finance laws.
