Financial Times: Trump warns of ‘riots’ if denied Republican nomination

Trevor Potter, a former Federal Election Commission chairman who advised Michael Bloomberg as the former New York mayor was considering his own independent run, said there were big barriers that would grow over time.

“Any thought that Trump might run as an independent is a complete fantasy if he waits until late May or early June to decide, because he would not have time to get on enough state ballots to win the presidency,” said Mr Potter. “After May 9th, he will have missed the Texas ballot, with its huge number of electoral votes.

But Mr Potter cautioned that while Mr Trump would be unable to mount a successful independent campaign by waiting that long, he could still get on the ballot in a number of states, which could spoil the chances of the GOP winning the White House by taking votes away from the eventual nominee.
