Brief filed in response to Order from July 16, 2018.
In League of Women Voters of North Carolina v. Rucho, a three hundred page opinion was filed. Judge Wynn wrote the opinion in which Judge Britt concurred and Judge Osteen Jr. concurred in part and dissented in part. The case is partnered with another suit titled Common Cause v. Rucho. In the case, the plaintiffs allege that North Carolina's 2016 Congressional Redistricting Plan was a partisan gerrymander. The plaintiffs also allege that this is in violation of Article I of the Constitution and the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. CLC is representing the plaintiffs in the case and have filed court briefs at every stage.
CLC published an issue brief on the eight ways adopting ranked choice voting can improve voting and elections.
The Chief of the FOIA Branch of the U.S. DOJ submitted a declaration for the court.
CLC received emails from the DOJ Civil Rights Division regarding the census citizenship question, which contains correspondence by John Gore, the acting head of the Justice Department's civil rights division.
CLC and co-counsel filed an amended complaint in Gill v. Whitford after receiving a roadmap from the U.S. Supreme Court in its June decision and submitting more evidence and adding 28 new plaintiffs.
CLC submitted a letter today on the proposed addition of the citizenship question to the 2020 Census. The last-minute addition of a citizenship question would harm the quality of the Census, hindering it's ability to accurately provide data on our nation's population.
