It has been eight years since the University of Virginia School of Law’s alumni magazine, UVA Lawyer, caught up with Trevor Potter ’82, the former chairman of the Federal Election Commission who founded, and serves as president of, the Campaign Legal Center in Washington, D.C. Back then, Potter was fresh off his appearances on “The Colbert Report,” where he famously helped host Stephen Colbert demonstrate to a mass audience the dangers to democracy posed by super PACs — those political action committees that, since the 2010 ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, can raise unlimited amounts of money from corporations, unions and individuals.
