The Wall Street Journal: Tax-Exempt Groups Give 2016 Hopefuls a Boost

“We have a campaign finance system that’s based on limits and disclosure. This is a way to get around all that,” said Lawrence Noble, senior counsel at the Campaign Legal Center, a nonpartisan group that advocates government regulation of campaigns. “The vast majority of the money won’t be reported,” Mr. Noble added.

Critics of the groups also say supporting individual candidates moves them far away from the intent of tax-exempt entities, which are supposed to exist for public purposes and not private benefit.
