Jacksonville: Opinion- Friday Editorial: Transparency in Political Ads Needed to Protect Democracy


The first rule of ethics is transparency.

Bad management and bad government can only exist for long in the shadows.

That rule applies especially to the elections system of this country. Russia’s interference in the 2016 presidential election took place largely out of sight, using foreign operatives in places like Macedonia to create confusion and dissension.


“The 2016 election exposed glaring holes in our ability to police foreign intervention in U.S. elections and this bill is an appropriate, bipartisan remedy,” said Trevor Potter, former Republican chairman of the Federal Election Commission.

“Voters have a right to be fully informed about who is trying to influence their vote, particularly foreign powers whose motives are contrary to American interests.”
