“It is a violation of both federal and Georgia state law to attempt to pressure or force an election official to change the results of an election improperly,” said Jonathan Diaz, legal counsel, voting rights at Campaign Legal Center. “When the president asked Georgia’s secretary of state to find more than 11,000 votes that don’t exist in his favor, he may have very well violated federal and state criminal and election law. It’s going to be up to prosecutors in both the Justice Department and the state of Georgia to decide whether they have enough evidence to pursue a case like that. But once again, at the very least, the president has inappropriately used his authority and his office to attempt to subvert the will of American voters and change the results of an election that he lost.”
