There is no legal requirement for political campaigns to offer refunds of donations that comply with federal regulations, said Erin Chlopak, a former FEC attorney who now directs campaign-finance strategy at the nonprofit Campaign Legal Center. If you end up donating more than your legal limit, however, campaigns cannot keep it. They have a few options on what they can do with the money, including refunding you. And Chlopak says it’s always worth asking for a refund. Given the frantic nature of campaigning, candidates may have already spent the funds by the time you ask. But they still have an interest in maintaining their reputations as responsible stewards of donors’ funds.
