Brendan Fischer, a campaign finance expert with the Campaign Legal Center, told the Morning News that the rules against staffers contributing to their boss's campaign are in place for a reason. If no such rule existed, members could pressure their staff to spend their own money on fundraising efforts. While it may be an honest mistake, Fischer warns that "if there's a pattern ... it might indicate that there's some pressure from above." According to the Morning News, the Marchant campaign made 18 such reimbursements between 2007 and 2017, including reimbursing Marchant's chief of staff more than $7,500.
