"The main thing that we want the court to understand is that partisan gerrymandering is worse now than anytime in recent memory and there is a way that the court can put a limit on this partisan gerrymandering," said Ruth Greenwood, senior legal counsel for the Campaign Legal Center, a national nonpartisan voter rights group which is representing the plaintiffs in the case. Paul Smith, an attorney with the Campaign Legal Center who will be arguing the plaintiff's case in front of the U.S. Supreme Court, said the court's decision to let the state hold off on new maps is not indicative of how the justices will rule overall.

“We don’t see the grant of a stay as a preview of the merits," he said. "They're two very different issues."
