40 people regain voting rights

Representatives with the Alabama Voting Rights Project visited the Town of Oakman Thursday to help individuals regain their right to vote.

John Paul Taylor and Adam Johnston of the Alabama Voting Rights Project (AVRP) worked with people at Oakman's Senior Center Thursday who had lost their right to vote and determined if they were eligible to be re-enfranchised.

According to information provided by AVRP, the Definition of Moral Turpitude Act passed in 2017, which resulted in the state of Alabama clarifying which felonies do not disqualify people from voting. AVRP notes that thousands of Alabamians are now eligible to submit an application to the state to have their voting rights restored as a result of the act's passage.
