Communications Manager, Campaign Finance and Ethics

CLC is seeking a Communications Manager to develop strategic communications plans that will elevate the issues of campaign finance and government ethics. The Communications Manager will report to CLC’s Director, Communications Campaigns and serve as a liaison between the communications team and the litigation/policy teams working on campaign finance and ethics. This position requires attention to detail, strong project management, excellent writing skills and ability to work some nights/weekends for rapid response, when necessary.  

With the 2020 election less than a year away, this is a critical role for the organization, and the ideal hire must have the experience to hit the ground running. We work in a fast-paced and collaborative environment, and only encourage team players to apply.    


  • Develop and implement integrated, strategic communications plans around litigation and policy initiatives 

  • Build and maintain relationships with reporters, including aggressively pitching media outlets  

  • Draft press materials including press releases, statements, advisories, blog posts, op-eds, reports and public education materials 

  • Provide press support, including preparing spokespeople for interviews, creating talking points and setting up interviews 

  • Plan and manage press conferences/calls and media events 

  • Create and provide text to assist the digital team in creating content for web, email and social platforms  

  • Work with litigation and policy staff to help produce and edit high quality materials such as advocacy reports, fact sheets, case pages, blogs and op-eds 

  • Conduct trainings for staff on communications best practices, how to speak with the media and how to write op-eds 

  • Assist the Development team in funder communication materials 


  • At least 5 years of experience working in communications for a nonprofit, campaign, on the Hill, or for a public affairs firm serving nonprofits. Knowledge of campaign finance and ethics law a plus, though not required 

  • Experience building relationships with press  

  • Proven ability to craft and implement strategic communications campaigns  

  • Strong project management skills  

  • Excellent writing and editing skills with knowledge of AP style 

  • Public speaking skills  

  • Must be a team player 

  • Must be available for after hour/weekend rapid response

The salary range for this role is $70,000 - $80,000 plus a competitive benefits package including 401(k) match, health, vision, dental, short & long-term disability, AD&D and life insurance.
